As the holidays approach each year I begin to decorate and watch Hallmark movies - while I long for the smell of Christmas cookies.

But every year without fail I ask myself - what does all of this - have to do with the celebration of the birth of Jesus? What does a Christmas tree have to do with giving to the poor and helping my neighbor? What does a global White Santa represent to Black children?

I remember my father telling all 4 of us early - "there is no strange man sneaking in this house and giving you all these toys!".

This is a sensitive subject - it is important for us to discuss..... materialism, Christmas trees, Santa, and the holidays.
